Auditions and Our Worth
Sun Studios in Memphis
Auditions, try outs, interviews, call backs, you name it, any situation where people are required to make snap judgements and asses or rank you skills is nerve wracking. We spend hours and days and weeks, sometimes even years preparing for a few minutes when someone judges us. Just today I auditioned for a regional choir I had been prepping for for a month. Two weeks ago I auditioned for my school musical. I am involved in a lot(probably too many) activities on top of being a full time high school student. As a result, I have had my fare share of auditions followed by excitement, and those followed by let down.
The choir I mentioned I auditioned for earlier today, I did not make. I honestly thought I made it this year, but alas, I was wrong. When I saw the list of those who made the choir, I rejoiced for my friends, but I also was crushed. Working hard in preparation for something and not reaping what you sewed is frustrating. I admit, I was drawn to tears, but not of self pity, but because of the lies that flooded into my head. I began to tell myself that I wasn't talented and that I should just give up. After all, I can't sing anyways. Then The Lord spoke truth into my heart through a song by the wonderful Ellie Holcomb."I take all the gifts that You have given and I stake my claim like they're my own,Will You help me when I forget to remember, the good I've got is yours alone."(The Only Hope I've Got)
Friends, every talent that we have is given to us by God. He gives us these gifts to use to Glorify Him. Every voice, dance move, sports skill, talent- you name it, we should offer up to God in praise. After all, the greatest thing we have to offer is that which was never ours to claim as our own- our lives and everything in them. This sounds much easier than it is. It's much easier to take pride in a skill or talent as a selfish token, but friends, every good and perfect gift is from above. So let's offer God's gifts to us as praises back to Him!
Please don't hear me bashing auditions, they are essential for the current fine arts system and they are the fairest way to determine skills in most cases. But your worth is not defigned by how well you audtition or perform, your worth was set in stone before you were born. Christ took every selfish mistake we make to the cross when He died. As ambassidors of Christ, our job is to use the God given skills we have, and with the Helps of the Holy Spirit, Glorify God's name to the ends of the earth.
You are not defined by your audition reslutls. You are not defined by your rank. You are not defined by your ACT score. My sister, you are His Princess. He loves you so deeply. There is nothing in this world that can separate you from His love.
"Our temporary minor problems are producing an eternal stockpile of glory for us that is beyond all comparison. We don't focus on the things that are seen, but the things that can't be seen. The things that can be seen don't last, but the things that can't be seen are eternal"- 2nd Corinthians 4:17-18
The King who painted this picture also created you for His Kingdom.
